TWA Tournament Round 6 – The Guy in the Corner

“The Shadow’s Void” by Tony Southcotte

“The Serpent’s Tooth” by David Webb

TWA 59 TITLE-01Greetings, short story lovers, and welcome to our second semi-final round for the 2015 Arena Tournament.

Tony Southcotte tattooed Hannah Newell in the Phat Ink Fight to get here.

In the other bracket we saw David Webb out-think Danny Brophy in the Mind Control Match-Up to earn his position here.

Now these two face off in Round 6: The Guy in the Corner.

Sometimes they’re a six-foot tall talking rabbit. Sometimes they’re a stuffed tiger come to life for a rambunctious boy. Sometimes they’re Tyler Durden. They can come about through whimsy, or hallucinogenics, or be the result of a psychotic break from reality.

We’re talking, of course, about imaginary friends. While at first blush this concept seems rooted in children’s tales about talking bears, plenty of adult-minded books and movies have tackled the concept of talking to a character that nobody can see but you.

This week our authors must bring us a tale with an imaginary friend in it. The friend can take any form or purpose they’d like and they are free to pursue any genre they wish. All we asked is that they give us a friend that only one character can see.

Which tale of imagined companionship will win?

Let’s find out.

Tony Southcotte represents the arena this week with “The Shadow’s Void.”

David Webb battles back with “The Serpent’s Tooth.”

The Imaginary Friend Face-Off has begun!

We have two judges that will render their decision next Monday. The third vote comes from you, the readers. We ask that you read both stories objectively, and then leave a comment below or on the story itself. Authors are not allowed to comment on their own stories, but we’re sure they’ll be checking in here. We’ll tally up the totals and announce our champion on Monday.

And remember, if you like one of this week’s stories, vote it up in the new all-time best of list (new stories appear at the bottom).
