An Announcement from the Arena

After a lot of thought over the past few months, we have decided that we will not be opening up the arena again in January for a 2017 season.

The simple fact is that Tony and Joe have been absolutely crushed for time as Human Echoes has grown and matured. The arena has not been getting the amount of love that it deserves and we would rather pause here on a high note rather than continue on with our attention split. The site deserves a dedicated team and, ideally, a coder to bring it to life and to really capture everything the internet can bring to short stories as an art form.

Over the past two and a half years the arena has brought forth a ton of amazing tales and pitted our favorite authors against each other with prompts that have ranged from devious to nuts. We’ve enjoyed this run very much and we did not make this decision lightly.

We also want to say that this is not goodbye forever. The site will stay up and the domain will stay ours. We are looking at this as a sabbatical and hope to return soon when we have the ability to put a dedicated team together…or when the urge to do battle overwhelms us again. Whichever comes first.

Thanks for coming with us on this ride and, as stated above, we will be back some day.

  1. Sad to see it go. By far my favourite publication. Thanks for taking trust in me and other newbie writers and thanks for the stories over the years 🙂

  2. Jon Jones (@dvwhat)

Sorry to hear the news, but totally understand. It’s an awful lot of effort to run something like this, and from a business model perspective sometimes tough decisions have to be made.

Are there any plans to produce followup anthology volumes?

  3. I’m sad to see this go on hiatus, but – like Jon said – sometimes tough decisions have to be made. I would much rather Tony, Joe and Al focussed their attention and gave their projects the attention they deserve. I’m sure the Arena will return at some point in the future, and until then there’s a lot to look back on and be proud of, as well as a lot of interesting new stuff to come from the Human Echoes in 2017.
